Pictures...
First, the kiddos - a couple more Christmas pictures.
Okay, here are the mantel and the picture mat - forgive the dust, it seems that I now can tell how much Calla has fingered the scanner.
And finally, the "Help!" section. Anyone have ideas for the kitchen? I'm including a picture of the curio shelves and of the tile trim on the counter (yes, the counters are wood) for color/stuff reference.
Sorry that tile shot is a little blurry - I had better ones, but the colors seemed more off in them, so I went with truer color over sharpness.
Any ideas?

Done with the Christmas shopping.
Finished up some gingerbread cookies today, too. I used Martha's recipe, and while I had some doubts while mixing it (cripe, molasses has a strong smell), they turned out beautifully. They actually taste quite a bit like the honey-flavored Teddy Grahams, but with a gingery-bite aftertaste. Very very good.
On a related note, I am sooooo happy that I had my mother-in-law's old mixer for that. I would have burned up my dinky hand mixer trying to use it. Yeesh. Next time, when I go to adding the dry ingredients to the butter/sugar/molasses/honey mixture, I'll switch to the dough hooks first, though, because even her mixer was struggling with the stuff by the end, and I REALLY don't want to ruin that mixer. Not b/c I have to give it back, because she's said I don't, and to just toss any parts of the appliance that I don't need, but b/c I really don't want to try to replace a decent quality mixer right now!
(I am pretty excited about the new coffeemaker and food processor from my folks. THANKS! Can't wait to see how much easier the carrot pancakes are with the food processor!)

It does break her rules about fake flowers (they have to look alive or as if they once were), but oh well. Baby steps, you know. Next step, figuring out what to put over the kitchen cabinets. Not fake ivy. But again, it needs color. Maybe some pics tomorrow...someone might have some ideas.

Though if she wants to come give lessons... I can see it now:

Martha: (eyes the not-quite-fitting bowl on the stand) Where's the bowl for it?
Me: Oh, it's long gone. I just use that one. It doesn't quite fit, but if you guide the bowl, the beaters don't bang into it *too* much.
[You should have heard the racket while I was figuring this out with my glass mixing bowl. Oy.]
Martha: Do you have another mixer?
Me: (handing Martha my $25 grocery-store-aisle hand mixer)
Martha: We need to go shopping.
See? It could be good. I could score a Kitchen Aid mixer or something.)
Where was I? Oh - anyhow, despite being at home instead of employed, I really had no more time than I had then. The kids' ages likely had something to do with that, I'm sure.
Which means, of course, that I forgot to add in the kids' lines to the imaginary dialogue above - the "Give me cookie PLEASE? Milk? Lemme have the milk PLEASE? Turn on the small tree PLEASE? Big tree on? Lemme go outside? Lemme go swingset PLEASE?...."

A couple of pictures
My mother-in-law watched the kiddos for a while on Monday - the same day she took the pics of them in the Texas garb, she also took these. I'll post a couple more in a few days.

The picture with the reindeer is an annual thing - he's had his picture taken looking at it for the past two years (this is year three). There's a different one with him touching the nose that, I think, my mother-in-law is calling the official reindeer pic of 2008, but I like this one with the scarf and hat.

Kiddo pics for Fiesta Bowl
I found out that Ohio State and Texas would be playing in the Fiesta Bowl. This gave me the perfect reason to get out the outfits that I bought at (2 separate) garage sales, put them on the kiddos, and take pics.

No, we didn't deliberately do that to Calla's outfit. Just managed to catch a pic at the right time.

WE KNOW ALREADY, YEESH!
Looks like all of the broadcast stations did a digital test tonight. Right over the last five minutes of the 9-9:30 program block (meaning people missed the end of shows).
So it's not enough for people to perhaps miss TV starting in Feb, but we have to be subjecting to missing shows *now*? Or could we at least make the test MUCH shorter? 30 seconds with "If you see this, your TV is not receiving digital programming. You will need a converter by February 2009. If you have cable or satellite, please contact your provider." Brief and lets you get back to your show while you CAN see it.
Grr.

My mother-in-law called this one "bashful". Actually, she did all of these as names of Dwarves from Snow White. Anyhow...

She called this Sneezy. Guess there wasn't a "Hungry", was there? Oh, and there's Murphy, the in-laws' basset hound, in the background.

The heat is....off?
Waiting for the furnace repair guy to come by and (probably) replace our pilot light.
I think we're at about 58 degrees inside and out. Glad it isn't a cold day today, and that I didn't need to go anywhere. Kiddos are still comfy in their jammies.
And is it just me, or are the footed jammies for big kids just weird?? I saw them at Target the other day - I mean, they looked huge (They were in the boys' section, so we're talking the boys' large, which is easily tall enough to fit me, yeesh). Do boys in that age range really want to still wear footed PJs? I'd think they'd be much happier in pajama pants/tops. Or even thermals. Footed PJs for me just scream little kids.
And don't get me started on the "not tonight, dear" adult footed jammies. Or even those lounge-wear blanket zip up things that (I thought) I used to see in the Carol Wright catalogs (don't seem to be any available online. Guess they weren't all that popular. Wonder why?).
Mom suggested baking something to warm up the house. I already made another batch of pumpkin muffins last night. Wonder what I can bake today? Time to browse the cookbooks...

Ahh, the 70s...
I got a box of patterns (and several copies of "The Workbasket" magazine) at a garage sale some time ago. The box was free, and I figured I might find something in there of interest.
Interest, definitely, LOL.
Unexpected gem #1: From the March 1971 vol. of the magazine - an article expounding on the wonders of sewing double-knit polyester. Okay, it's the 70s, big deal. Then - "...This particular fabric costs about $8 a yard." Holy cow! $8 a yard in 1971??? It's not even some kind of fancy silk brocade, it's 100% polyester!
Man.
I'll spare you the recipe for Kraut-Olive Salad, intended to be pressed inside a hollowed french loaf and chilled. How...um...appetizing. And I don't think I could make myself try the Kraut chocolate cake, either (takes 2/3 cup of rinsed, drained, and chopped sauerkraut). It might be fine, I dunno, but I'm afraid to try.
The knit two-color man's tie is pretty amusing too. It reminds me of the ones that were in when I was in middle school (in the mid-80s).
I think I'm gonna enjoy just flipping through the little magazines.

Found out that they were using the flumist vaccine - nasal spray syringe, not a needle. Apparently this had been an age 5-49 thing, but was reformulated and can now be used for 2-49. So the kiddos avoided being jabbed - yay!
Though Calla still ran when she saw the bandaids and syringes. And still cried while we were holding her still for the nasal spray. She just does not like to be messed with.
But! When it was over, she calmed right back down (muuuuch faster than if it had been a needle).
So, now the kiddos and I have our flu vaccines. Hopefully they'll have guessed correctly on the strains to vaccinate against!

Rather entertaining!
Maps at live.com
A friend of mine used this to show me where he grew up. I then spent the next hour putting in addresses and looking around. Of course it gets our location wrong - I expect that now of about every map service - but knowing what you're looking for, it's usually easy to find it.
Put in the address, then click bird's eye view. You can zoom in or out, and you can rotate view. I spent a while "driving" (click and drag the hand) around my hometown, looking at the first house I remember, then looking at the lake downtown, then following one of the roads out to Acme, etc. If it seems to pause while loading, don't just sit still waiting - continue to move the view some, and it'll load. At Acme, there was a black square where nothing showed, but when I rotated the view, it came in.
It's easy to lose track of time!

Voting Day
It was ever-so-much-fun with two squirmy toddlers. So glad I did it *early* when there was no line (a week and a half ago or so) instead of today. Heck, I hear there were lines even for early voters, as the day approached. Guess I beat the rush.
Anyhow, hope y'all voted. And whoever wins, I hope and pray that they do well by the country, and that, as divisive as this election has been, it won't be a lasting division.
And that it won't be a tainted/questioned win for the elected ticket.

My right arm is getting sorer and sorer (I checked, that's the arm the pneumonia vaccine was in. I didn't recall the flu shot bothering me that much last time I got it, so that it was the other vaccine makes sense). At this point, it hurts to raise it *at all*. Heck, it hurts a bit to type (with my upper arm tightly at my side). So, some ibuprofen, and I'm gonna get off the comp for the evening. Brief kudos to Target, though (as that's where I got the immunizations); they included a gift bag of: a pharmacy coupon (free gift card with purchase of new or transfer of old prescription), a travel pack of Kleenex, a travel bottle of Purell, a sample of Theraflu (plus $2 off coupon), and a bottle of 500mg vitamin C supplements (15 tablets). I don't know if this was the intent or not, but I'm gonna be taking them for the next two weeks to hopefully keep from contracting the flu from the vaccine.
Off to bed to relax. Night y'all!

The kiddos did not want me to get the shots. They saw the needles and were crying, even though I kept telling them they were for me, not for them. Well, either they were crying from the needles, or just crying b/c I wasn't there at the cart with them, but instead, sitting behind a table. Could have been a little of both, but everyone around them seemed to think it was cute and assumed that it was b/c they didn't want me to get the shots. Hey, at least the other folks were amused instead of annoyed!
Kiddos got to have my "good girl" candy. Then milk at Starbucks. All was then right with the world, as far as they were concerned. :D
Not-Halloween Halloween party tonight. Bonfire, hayrides, etc. Should be fun! Calla will be a fairy, Patrick is just going in a Halloween-themed shirt and hat. They get to ride there in "Papi's brown ride" (1931 Studebaker), so they will LOVE that.

Day Out with Thomas pics
Pictures! Yep, it's Thomas. And the kiddos. Yes, Patrick is wearing a Thomas jacket, shirt, jeans, and shoes, LOL. It really was rather disorienting seeing Thomas so big, when you're used to seeing him on DVDs or as toys, LOL. He didn't bother the kiddos at all, though.
On the other hand, Patrick wasn't so sure what to make of Sir Topham Hatt. I really wasn't too surprised by his reaction, LOL.
Kiddos loved riding the train. Something must have been noisy at the time, or Patrick was still expecting the whistle to sound as loud inside as outside.
I like this picture.
And of course, there were trains to play with. There were also tables set up to color and do stamps at, and Calla did some of that, but the toy trains made for more colorful pics. Look at how serious they both look!
They REALLY had fun. It wasn't until I got home that I realized we could have went out there without having purchased tickets for the train ride. I thought they'd check them at the entrance or something before being admitted to the area at all, but nope. Of course, there's no way we could have skipped the train ride - there would have been some serious distress by the kiddos, and I can't say I'd blame them. But it's nice to know you could go for free. I also really thought it was a strange idea to have a video area at the event - I mean, the kids come out here to see the "real thing", not watch DVDs, right? Heh - it was a FANTASTIC idea to have it there. The kiddos needed a place to be able to relax for a bit while we waited to see how the pictures taken by the staff turned out (they take your pics with Thomas and with Sir Topham Hatt, but tell you that you're welcome to take your own as well. Theirs didn't turn out that great, unfortunately, so we didn't buy them).
It was fun. The kiddos had a blast at the other areas as well - the petting zoo and bounce house, specifically (apparently these other areas vary depending on what the location hosting the event has access to). Had a hard time getting Patrick out of the bounce house, LOL.
It was definitely worth the ticket; the kids loved the train ride, and really loved the activities and such.

The (most common) Fatima Prayer
(or, and now for something completely different)
When on a (largely) Catholic message board, you are going to read Catholic prayers. I have no issue with this at all - though I'm not Catholic, I have a number of relatives who are. I've been in some vehemently anti-Catholic churches, and I've heard enough "Whore of Babylon" sermons to last my whole life. So no lectures - I'm not posting this to hear how wrong they are, that the Pope is the anti-Christ, or anything of that nature.
Now, all that being said, one of the prayers I've seen on the board is the Fatima prayer - "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Amen." That last half of it really struck me as being an incredibly powerful statement.
(No arguments on "not everyone will go to Heaven". I know. This isn't about stating that everyone will, any more than praying for any particular thing is a statement that you know you'll get it. I am *not* a prosperity gospel/"Claim that Mercedes in faith" type. It's expressing a desire that everyone would/could - even though we know, unfortunately, that's not gonna happen, as scripture states that there will be some cast out - the sheep and goats parable, for one.)
Most Christians of any type can say the Lord's Prayer from memory, and know the "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" part (or debts/debtors, etc.). And forgiving *is* a profound thing to do. Yes, it can be done in the wrong spirit - the gleeful "heaping coals on their heads" type of thing - but properly done, it can be extraordinarily difficult, especially when forgiving those who cannot or will not ask forgiveness.
But.
I think that last part of the Fatima prayer takes it another step further - in a sense, it shows complete forgiveness - wanting that person who has wronged you to be able to experience heaven as well.
The example that comes to mind is Jeffrey Dahmer. It's said that he converted in prison - or perhaps it was more of a reconciliation - but regardless, that he came to what most Christians would recognize as salvation, including baptism. It's one thing to (as unimaginably difficult as it would be) come to a point of forgiving him if he had killed a loved one. But to honestly pray that you hoped to see him in heaven? That, as I imagine it, is forgiveness perfected.
Definitely something to be learned from that prayer.

What is your "actual" (heh) class status?
I thought it was interesting - it actually puts us a little higher than I would have said, largely b/c of education level. I'm actually amazed at how high a four-year degree puts you in the education column. Not to say that it doesn't give you a fair number of advantages, I just wouldn't have thought it would have rated that highly these days.

The carrot pancakes...
...were fantastic. They do taste like pumpkin spice.
Carrot pancakes (and hummus and other varieties as well - my sister said that her MIL made the hummus ones as a dinner party appetizer; she made them smaller than silver-dollar sized for that). In this case, yay for Parade magazine!
The carrot pancakes were definitely worth all of that grating, though I'll still try to get a food processor and go to a near-puree for the next time. It would also better help if trying to hide the carrots - the texture is fine without, though. You also definitely do NOT want the salad-grate texture. You want as fine as you can get. I left out the curry powder, and my sister has done this with fresh ginger.

90 degrees
This is ridiculous. I always console myself every fall with my mother-in-law's reassurance that my husband could never have a swimming party for his birthday when he was growing up because, no matter how warm it was through September, it always cooled by his birthday.
It's 90 degrees today. It was yesterday, too. The hubby could have had his swimming party this year.

CAKE!!
This is so dangerous, LOL! Chocolate cake in 5 minutes (prep and cook time), without buying the pre-made instant cake bowl things.
This is not my recipe - received in email, no idea of the original source.
CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
1 Coffee Mug (Make sure it is microwaveable)
4 Tablespoons flour (plain flour, not self-raising)
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil
3 Tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
a small splash of vanilla essence (vanilla extract)
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla essence, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (This can serve 2)

Autumn
It's approaching. September is typically the last month of consistent hot weather around here, and I am seriously counting down the days. I like Texas for a number of reasons, really, but I am an autumn/winter person, and I look forward to it each year.
And actually, this will be good for the kiddos too - more outdoor time on their swingset, with a mommy who doesn't mind being outside in the more comfortable weather.
With the fall also comes the new school year, and although I'm not teaching, it does mean that Patrick gets to resume speech therapy at the elementary school - which he really enjoys - as well as continuing with his private speech therapy (which he also enjoys). There is one little boy at speech therapy at the school in the same session, and they seem to interact well, so that makes things all the more fun for them, and hopefully, they'll both gain quite a bit from it.
I've joined a mailstring/group of local women who meet up for playdates, events, etc. The group is designed for lots of opportunities to get together (so that no matter what you like, you'll find something), kid-friendly. Looking forward to getting to one of the events soon!
Busy stuff coming up - local cities' festivals and a car tour that Patrick is going on with Jay's folks (so Calla and I will have mommy-daughter time) for this month, next month we have tickets to one of the Day Out with Thomas things, there's the Texas Country Reporter festival in Waxahachie coming up as well, plus I'd like to try to get to the state fair one day, and we have tickets for the Ft Worth Zoo. I think next year I'd like to look into some kind of passes for the museums and such around here - or if not next year, definitely the year after, so we can take the kiddos. They LOVED the children's museum at Fair Park, and really liked going to the zoo when we were up visiting my folks - so I really think it'll be worthwhile.

click stream = compuserve?
I was trying to install Flash Player, but the installer kept telling me I had "CompuServe" running, and needed to close it. I do not have CompuServe loaded. Nor running. Nor AOL. Huh?
One of the wunnerful ladies over on the NFP board asked to see a screenshot of my task manager (the processes tab, since the applications tab was empty). When I did that, I remarked, in case she'd ask, that the "cs" showing on the process list was click stream, not compuserve. On a whim, though, I decided to close out that process (I'd been meaning to uninstall that anyhow). Lo and behold, Flash Player installed.
So apparently anything that says "cs" = CompuServe. Heh.
(Off to uninstall that clickstream thing anyways. And yes, it was something I did intentionally install.)

Pilgrim's Pride - good job!
Just a quick way-to-go for Pilgrim's Pride, whom I emailed this morning regarding a dozen eggs. Less than an hour and a half later, I got a phone call from them. They wanted to let me know that they'd be sending a coupon for a new dozen eggs, but also asked for clarification on what was wrong (because it *was* weird - the eggshells had shriveled like fingers in bath water).

1. I like staying up late to catch up on laundry. It's the perfect quiet time just for me as the loads run. (It was even better when I had a laptop, LOL) Hate putting laundry away, though. Especially (particularly) stuff that has to be hung up.
2. I must sleep with covers. I may kick them off once I fall asleep, but no matter how hot it is, I must have a sheet or something. (Incidentally, I used to do the foot-outside thing too, Sara!)

Mice
They're cute as pets or in cartoons. They are not cute as uninvited houseguests (although I think many folks feel that way about *any* uninvited houseguest, whether of the 2, 4, 6, 8, or "too freaked out to count" -legged variety).
The hubby said that some relatives of ours have also been fighting the "get OUT!" battle against field mice. We *thought* we were done, but had a sighting last night - trap got it overnight, though, so it is now out, and our total is tied with theirs.
Note: This is not a competition, and I do not want to "win" with the most evicted (dead or alive) mice (it'd be like winning the ugliest couch/rec room/kitchen type of contest. Heck, even then, at least you get a prize of some kind). However, it is somewhat reassuring to find out that someone else is having the same issues. With all the construction going on around here, I'm not too surprised that there's more activity. Been here for over four years now, and we've only had them once before - and NOT like this!
I *think* we may be done now, as we weren't really seeing any signs of activity prior. Traps are staying out until we're sure (well, some of them will stay out period).
Off to do laundry...
The hubby said that some relatives of ours have also been fighting the "get OUT!" battle against field mice. We *thought* we were done, but had a sighting last night - trap got it overnight, though, so it is now out, and our total is tied with theirs.
Note: This is not a competition, and I do not want to "win" with the most evicted (dead or alive) mice (it'd be like winning the ugliest couch/rec room/kitchen type of contest. Heck, even then, at least you get a prize of some kind). However, it is somewhat reassuring to find out that someone else is having the same issues. With all the construction going on around here, I'm not too surprised that there's more activity. Been here for over four years now, and we've only had them once before - and NOT like this!
I *think* we may be done now, as we weren't really seeing any signs of activity prior. Traps are staying out until we're sure (well, some of them will stay out period).

Muppet Show observations
We purchased the Muppet Show DVDs for season 1 and 3. One of the segments featured was this one, when Marisa Berenson was the guest.
I personally think it's hysterical, but my sense of humor runs that way. ;) Anyhow, when looking up info on Marisa, the hubby found out that her sister was on one of the 9/11 flights (and that she herself was also flying that day, but from Paris to the US - her flight ended up being diverted).
In looking at the info on the songwriter, we found that he also wrote the song in this sketch, featuring Candice Bergen. When the hubby said the songwriter's name, though, my jaw dropped.

Garage sale find!
I have a natural keyboard again. :)
Now I just need to get used to it again - takes a little time. Especially since it's not only the keyboard being split, but also an older keyboard (though like new - seems like they never used it), so the key size is larger - newer keyboards all seem to have the smaller laptop-sized keys.
It'll take some time, but I'm looking forward to it - I didn't realize how comfy they were until my last one bit the dust, and my wrists and hands were getting sore and fatigued in under an hour with the standard keyboard.
So very happy. Like new, $5. Whee!

A *Way-To-Go* for Pizza Hut
I was looking up nutritional info online for Pizza Hut, so I could enter my pizza slice into my SparkPeople nutrition tracker. I didn't know how easy or hard it might be to do, given the choices of toppings and such - it's not like they can just post info for standard menu selections.
Their website made it pretty darn easy - pick the crust, the toppings, etc. You can add dipping sauces and such if you used them with the appetizers and so on. It'll calculate your whole meal for you.

Food and drink
Mm. Organic dark chocolate (Dagoba's roseberry) and Ginger Beer - with real flavor, none of that canned stuff.
I'm a happy camper.
The kiddos like the crystallized ginger I bought. I was kinda surprised - it's pretty strong stuff - but they both love it.
I wouldn't want to do all of my shopping at the natural foods market - okay, I would *want* to, but I can't afford to! - but it's nice to get some things now and then. Especially those that we just would not be able to get easily at the supermarket.

Only time I was ever entertained by anyone being chloroformed was in reading the Hardy Boys novels. Seems like that was *always* happening to them. (I never read Nancy Drew - did she get a lot of that too?)
I'm going to hope that at LEAST she consented, but I'm not clicking on the video to read the comments and try to find out. Nor am I providing a link.

Another of those unexpected things.
The last thing I anticipated, after skipping Friday's cardio (we were on a car tour - last time we had one, I just did Friday's cardio on Thursday, along with the usual weight training) and not tracking calories on the tour (I did the last time), though I did try to eat sensibly, was to weigh myself today and see that I had lost weight over the past week (about 2 lbs).

One of those unexpected discoveries
I've been using SparkPeople for almost a month and a half now to track eating and exercise. I'm glad I have - haven't seen huge payoffs yet, but I'm happy with slow progress in just making better choices, without feeling like I *can't* eat this or that, or overdoing exercise in a way that I'd never be able to keep up long-term.
At any rate, part of the program, if you will, is tracking calories (and fat, protein, etc.). Most of the time, you'll find what you're eating already in their database, but if not, you can enter it as well. This leads to some interesting discoveries sometimes.
In this case, I was having my first cup of coffee today, and used my non-fat powdered "cream"er. To get enough to lighten the coffee to my taste, I used 2 tbsp. -- 60 Calories (and a packet of artificial sweetener). In getting a second cup, I instead used 1/4 cup of whole milk and 1 tsp of real sugar. 52.5 Calories total, 2 g. of fat, and none of the sweetener aftertaste. I'd rather go ahead and take the 2 g of fat.
I've seen articles that warn of folks' reliance on non-fat/low-fat, and ignorance of the Calories they're consuming. I just didn't think it'd actually also show up in my coffee. Lesson learned.

Gorgeous shot
Another website I enjoy checking on from time to time is Improv Everywhere. Their latest mission was to have folks lining the sidewalk on the Brooklyn Bridge, all taking pictures and creating a kind of wave down the bridge with the camera flashes. They have some pictures of the bridge from this mission, one of which (a longer exposure shot) they've artsified by making it B&W with the camera flashes in blue.
It is stunning. It is also now my computer wallpaper. Do go look at the site (this particular mission is featured here.

Niftier than I anticipated
While visiting my folks, Calla was using my dad's handheld solitaire game as a phone - walking around their house with it open like a flip-style cell phone. So, because she liked it so much, and against my protests (i.e. slipped in a bag when we weren't looking), he sent it home with us for her. She has plenty of toy phones here, I might add - a few of which are old cell phones with the battery pulled out.
So while she does still sometimes use the solitaire game in this fashion, she typically is using one of the other phones. Or her cup. Or whatever else she grabs. (Plan for calling us on our cell vs. on the home line when Calla gets older - I foresee her being on the phone quite a bit)
Since she doesn't use the game that much now, I've taken to playing it. Now, I wasn't sure how much anyone here would use it, beyond Calla's phone rotation - but I *love* it. It's addictive! My thought had been, "But I usually have the computer up. I can play spider solitaire on it". This handheld game, though, is backlit - so playing after the earlier-to-bed members of the household go to bed can be done without the light-up-the-room (and attract-every-gnat-in-the-house) effect of the monitor.
I would have bought one for myself long ago had I realized I would like it so much!
And now, to shut down the comp and play solitaire. Night! :)

A little greener.
In several ways. First, in our bank account. Yay stimulus payment! It may or may not do what the government wants, but it still came at a much-needed time for us.
Secondly though, I finally bought some canvas shopping bags when I was at the grocery store. Now, I'm not a huge pro-"green" type. Not because I think saving resources isn't important, but I'm just kinda turned off by the trendiness of it. At least it's trendiness with some positive outcomes, perhaps, but still. Certain things I can and will do, and certain things I can't/won't. A more fuel-efficient car would be wonderful, but this one is *paid for*, and no matter how many people say that a more efficient vehicle would pay for itself - it may well, no doubt - I'd still have a car payment that I don't currently have (ditto things like new windows in the house).
Aaaanyhow.
The shopping bags, I like. They hold a LOT, and seem very sturdy. Win-win, if you ask me. And bonus - the woman ahead of me in line today at the grocery store saw my bags on the belt and decided to get some too. She said I guilted her into it, LOL. They are nifty bags, though, and would make good beach bags and things like that in addition to grocery shopping bags.
Hope the Brookshire's folks won't go weird on me if I go there with my HEB bags. :D

Say a prayer if you would?
If you would, please, say a prayer for the family of our school's former office manager (she worked there for a few years, but had to leave for financial considerations). Her husband was diagnosed about 5 months ago with late stage colon cancer - if I remember correctly, stage 5.
His liver has shut down, so they're talking hours now. They do have a lot of friends supporting them, and she and her husband have come to peace with this. They have three sons who are having a harder time, understandably (10, 12, and 14).
Please keep Linda, her husband Gerald (Gerry) and their family in your prayers as they prepare for his passing.

A couple of nifty things
Firstly, in reading Museum of Hoaxes, I found an entry that led to a "real art vs. fake art" quiz at the site below.

It features a number of other quizzes pitting recognized great works against not-so-recognized works, mostly, it seems in reading his analysis of the results, to question what makes great art/writing/music great - the substance, or the name attached to it?
I stunk at the art furniture/cheap furniture quiz. Got about 60% on the modern art/fake art one. Got 83% on the known/unknown artist quiz.
Former GM Vaschon and I still chat with some regularity in IMs. We do a lot of sending links to youtube videos to each other - usually get on some random kick of old Muppet Show videos or the such like (or perhaps playing games like looking for videos of songs with colors in the title. Yes, we are that geeky. Come on, we GMed/GM for a text-based game!). One such exchange led through something billed as the worst music video ever (I tend to agree), then to a Daler Mehndi video (Tunak Tunak Tun), and then to something else that we both favorited. Take a look/listen - I got partway through it and realized that I really, really liked it -- Mehboob Mere, by Sunidhi Chauhan.

Patrick funny
Patrick was playing with his trains in the living room. He was ready for bed (jammies and such), but hadn't gone to bed yet. Suddenly he announced "Okay, night-night!", turned off his trains, and went to bed. No prompting. Just did it himself.

Speaking of the little guy's birthday...
It was quite the birthday weekend at church. When we sang Happy Birthday before our first-Sunday-of-the-month lunch, we sang it to four people (two of whom were my FIL and Patrick). Sometimes it feels like we sing Happy Birthday every Sunday. We're pretty darn good at it, I must say (especially since we're all used to singing four parts a capella).
Tonight we had my in-laws over for Patrick's birthday. I gave my FIL a sudoku (you mean spellcheckers don't recognize that word?? Get with the times!) book for his birthday - he was a very happy camper - and then, of course, Patrick got his gifties, almost all of which were train-related - track expansion for his Thomas & Friends wooden railway set (which we got him on Saturday with a gift card from my folks), a different Thomas engine that is Geo-Trax style (though not that brand), and actually works with the track from a little pull-back-and-release one I got him a year and a half ago or so. We had no idea it worked with that track, but it's a nice surprise, since my MIL thought it worked with the wooden one (it doesn't, though it very nearly fits) - so he still gets to enjoy it just the same, and an electronic toy drum pad (which Calla loved too!).
It was a noisy-theme birthday. :D
Even his cake had a little wind-up Thomas train that ran in a little slot-track plastic piece that sat on it. I did mention that he LOVES Thomas, didn't I? If not, you get the idea now. At least with the train sets, they can expand as he gets older. It would be nice if we had the space for him to do model railroads. Well, maybe not, actually - with the tendency of the hubby's family line toward obsessiveness, I don't know that I want to consider how much we could end up spending on something that can get as big as model railroads. But still, I could really see Patrick and my FIL having fun putting together layouts. Especially since they could include in the layout the old cars that they both also love so much.

To whoever designed the packaging for the Glade flameless candles:
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making plastic packaging that does NOT involve using scissors or knives to try to cut into the package and tear fingers to shreds on the sharp plastic.
Nice little finger notch things and the package snapped right open.

Definitely hit some moments where I just plain blanked out. Faster typing would help too. It's also picky - it's not case sensitive, but it does not take abbreviations (won't take USA, will take united states), and apparently won't take "England" but does take "united kingdom".

Medical Guessing Game!
My mom's in town for my birthday. So of course, I had the lovely pleasure of spending part of my morning at the local rapid-response clinic.
